He was born Philip Charles Toubus in Winnetka Illinois on April 17th, 1947. His family was wealthy and he is actually the nephew of Sara Lee; yes the baked good Sara Lee. Paul attended University of Wisconsin-Madison before deciding to pursue acting.
He actually had some great success as a mainstream actor. He was in several Broadway plays and even had a starring role in the musical Hair but I think all of his mainstream fans know him best for his great portrayal as Peter in the 1973 film version of Jesus Christ Superstar. Man this guy can sing! Shortly after this he signed with William Morris, the biggest agency for actors for those of you who don't know, and moved to Hollywood where in appeared in several TV shows.
Paul started working in porn in 1974 after he met porn producers The Mitchell Brothers in San Francisco where he was doing a musical. He began doing several porn loops for them and in 1976 he did his first porn film, Autobiography Of A Flea. I've seen it and it's pretty good. I highly recommend it. The book is really great too if you're an erotica fan.
The next year he won the Adult Film Association Of America Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Virginia. He's actually won several awards in the industry besides that one he's a two time Xbiz Award winner, a two time XRCO Award Winner-both for best director-and a ten time AVN Award Winner! No surprise he's won that many awards though, he's acted in over 500 films.
In 1985 he starred in the film series Taboo American Style. This is also the year he started directing and in 1986 he began directing for Vivid.
After his divorce from his longtime wife Judy Epstein, he married porn actress and director Anita Rinaldi in 2001.
In 2006 Paul was inducted into The Legends Of Erotica Hall Of Fame. He is also, not surprisingly, a member of both the AVN and XRCO Hall Of Fame.
